As someone who had just finished my PhD at Oxford and had taken up a postdoctoral position at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, I remember vividly first hearing their album in fall 1969. The creativity and lovely three-part harmonies blew me away, and it wasn't long before I became hooked on the band's music.

One of the things that sets Crosby, Stills & Nash apart from other musical groups is the fact that all three members are talented songwriters. David Crosby was arguably the best folk-rock harmony singer on the planet, and Graham Nash was an extremely talented singer. Stephen Stills was a superb, creative guitarist who brought a unique perspective to their music.

The band's history is rooted in their individual experiences with personal tensions in their earlier bands. In 1968, Stephen Stills' band Buffalo Springfield had disintegrated, and that same year Graham Nash dropped out of his band The Hollies. David Crosby had been tossed out of the Byrds in 1967.

Despite these challenges, the trio decided to collaborate, and it was a decision that would change music history forever. They formed Crosby, Stills & Nash, a group composed of refugees from three different singing groups.

The result was Suite: Judy Blue Eyes, a song that captured the essence of their unique sound and style. The song's origins are rooted in Stephen Stills' personal experiences, and it's a testament to the power of music to transcend time and generations.
